The main purpose of the Spearman Line is to counter cavalry units (such as scouts, knights, camels). Archer Units absolutely decimate spears so it is best if spearmen are support by their own units or cavalry. Spearmen go well with Archers during the Feudal Age, and can be a main component of Imperial Age armies, once upgraded.
